Carnival Cruise Lines inks deal for third Dream-class ship
December 2, 2009
Fairfax, VA
Carnival Cruise Lines said it expects to welcome a third Dream-class ship to its fleet in spring 2012.
Fincantieri has agreed to build a 3,690-passenger vessel at its shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. Carnival said the ship would be similar to the Carnival Dream, a ship that entered service last month, with some new elements to be revealed at a later date.
Fincantieri is already building the second sister ship to the Carnival Dream, the 130,000-ton Carnival Magic. That ship is scheduled to enter service in May 2011.
The ship due to enter service in 2012 is slated to have a 300-foot-long corkscrew water slide, the Ocean Plaza indoor/outdoor cafe, a 23,750-square-foot Cloud 9 Spa and an outdoor promenade with cantilevered whirlpools that extend over the ship’s sides.
Carnival said the all-in cost of the 130,000-ton ship would be $200,000 per lower berth, or $738 million.
“Ordering a third Dream-class ship speaks volumes about the confidence we have in the continued success of this series,” said Carnival Cruise Lines CEO Gerry Cahill.
