Disney to offer Alaska cruises
September 14, 2009
Disney Cruise Line will visit Alaska for the first time in 2011, operating seven-day cruises out of Vancouver on the Disney Wonder.
The ship will spend four months in Southeast Alaska, offering 18 departures calling in Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway, and visiting Tracy Arm fjord.
With two new ships slated to debut in 2011 and 2012, speculation had been widespread over where Disney would expand.
Alaska was rumored to be a possibility when Disney applied for a 10-year permit to visit Glacier Bay that would have begun in 2010. But the line withdrew its application, tamping down speculation that Alaska would be one its new destinations.
To prepare for the Alaska sailings, Disney said it would add a venue to the Wonder called Outlook Café, a 2,500-square-foot area atop deck 10 that will allow passengers to view their surroundings through floor-to-ceiling, curved glass windows.
A spiral staircase will connect Outlook Café to the existing Cove Café one deck below. The 65-seat lounge will be added to the Wonder during a renovation in October.
Before and after the summer season in Alaska, the Wonder will sail seven-day Mexican Riviera cruises out of Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta.
Also in 2011, the Disney Magic will return to the Mediterranean, operating 10- and 11-day cruises out of Barcelona. The Magic will visit Italy, France, Spain, Tunisia and Malta.
Guests will be able to book Disney Wonder and Disney Magic itineraries for the 2011 season beginning Sept. 28, 2009.
“We’re excited to offer this incredible choice of itineraries for 2011, with cruise vacation options for every family – whether that’s outdoor adventure in Alaska, the beauty and culture of Europe, folklore and pageantry of Mexico or tropical fun in the Caribbean,” Disney Cruise Line President Karl Holz said in a statement.
