Disney to Sail from California in 2011

March 31, 2009

Disney Cruise Line plans to reposition the Disney Wonder from its Florida homeport in Port Canaveral to the port of Los Angeles in 2011.

The company said Monday that it is working with the port to finalize a two-year agreement with a three-year extension option; the deal is expected to be approved later this week.

At a meeting with the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said that having Disney operate out of Los Angeles would “provide a great boost to the local economy by generating business and tourism revenue in San Pedro and throughout the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.”

Disney said that the new homeport is part of its overall expansion plan, which includes the addition of two new ships, the Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy, slated to arrive at Florida’s Port Canaveral in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

Disney has tested the West Coast market by having a ship spend two summer seasons operating Mexican Riviera itineraries from Los Angeles. The Disney Magic operated seven-day cruises from the West Coast last summer, and previously in 2005.

The cruise line has not yet announced the Disney Wonder’s itineraries for 2011.
